Description

While squirrels are considered pests at the bird feeding station by some, others welcome them to their backyards and provide a special habitat and feeding place of their own. Squirrels will use the house for nesting, as well as, for protection from the winter elements. They frequently will use an old woodpecker hole, natural cavity or create a nest of leaves. Placed high in a tree, the backyard visitor will quickly find this shelter with its entrance hole positioned close to the trunk of a tree. Hand crafted in Maine of sustainably grown Eastern White Pine. Repair or replacement of any defects in manufacturing or materials upon return of any defective item to Coveside Conservation Products.

If you can't find joy in being kind to wildlife, or think that it is your business to decide which species live, and which do not, then this is not for you. For me, I find it infinitely more gratifying and interesting to love squirrels, feed and house them, and watch them. There are other squirrel houses on the market. I've tried some; squirrels prefer this one: it is the right size, has the right opening, has a vented roof for summer use, is strong.I love this squirrel house because our squirrels love it. We have about 10 of them, placed as high on trees as we could get them. We oriented their doors toward our house, so we can see little people looking out. Squirrels will have their babies in these -- one decided to use it the day it was installed -- and 2 or so will pile in for winter napping out of the cold. Everything about the box is right, and I think all are in use at all times. Squirrels like to do a little sunning and relaxing on their roof deck. They'll be used year-round: for year-round sleeping, and as nestboxes for their babies. The boxes have a sturdy hook at the top back, and a single nail in the tree will make hanging easy. Don't hang them on beech or other trees with smooth bark that squirrels have trouble climbing. And don't hang them too close to a feeder, or the traffic will inconvenience the occupants. Also, choose a tree near other trees, so that squirrels can make it home without becoming dinner for a passing fox. Some squirrels will still prefer traditional winter nests of leaves, but others will bring those leaves into these boxes and camp here.Be sure to clean your boxes out at the end of summer, before the leaves begin to fall, so that there plenty of fresh leaves for your squirrels to use in redecorating. And consider spraying the interiors for fleas before rehanging the boxes.
