House of Shadows is one of my favorite Neumeier reads, and one I come back to periodically. As one of four siblings, I always love stores where the characters have strong ties to their siblings, but make their own paths through life. Though the sisters are orphaned quite early in the story, the ties that bind them carry throughout. Add in a beautifully crafted world of an intriguing bardic sorcerer from abroad, royal intrigue and some romance, there is nothing not to love in House of Shadows. The book focuses mostly on two of the sisters, Nemienne and Karah, and moves us through the geisha like world of flower girls into dragon intrigue. Neumeier's characters are always complex and richly drawn. This book is no exception. Highly recommend!
