I first heard Makaya Ntshoko with the Dollar Brand Trio with Johnny Gertze, I thought he was the strongest player in the Trio. On this outing, a beautiful album, he does not stand out as the leader and overwhelm the group, he is in the mix and plays beautiful. The album is a post bop meet free jazz vein.It is not a Township or South African Jazz album.Humpty Dumpty takes you to a Coltrane with Roy Haynes;Bebbi to Charles Lloyd quartet with Keith Jarrett and hews particularly close to The Monterey live recording of Forest Flower.Happy House to the Old and New Dreams Quartet.Most of the time, I think it sounds like the Keith Jarrett Trio with...may be Dewey Redman (ok, may be a more muscular Charles Lloyd? If you enjoyed Forest Flower, you will love this album completely.References aside, it is an enjoyable live album. There's a whole lot to like here. A great quartet with plenty of fire that knows how to keep it bubbling.
