Design House 522979 Dishwasher Air Gap - Stainless Steel Sink Air Gap for Kitchen Plumbing, Prevents Backflow & Contamination - Perfect for Dishwashers, Garbage Disposals & Under Sink Installations

The installation is simple. I got a titanium step bit off amazon for about the same price as this air gap, punched a hole in the stainless steel sink, and threaded the nut on. Then, I clamped two hoses. Finished.Or was I?I allowed the dishwasher to fill for a minute, then cancelled the cycle to test draining as instructed in the manual. When I did, my counter top flooded.I did it again a few more times adjusting the hoses thinking maybe it was a problem with gravity or siphoning. That didn't help.Then, I popped the cap off and tried again. I immediately realized what was wrong. The inner tube coming from the dishwasher points straight up at a rectangular box shaped piece that "SHOULD" defect the water back down and into the drain. IT DOES NOT.Imagine the box this product will come in from amazon. You open the tape on the top and have 4 flaps. Rip those off. Now, rip one of the sides off so you have a 3-sided box with a bottom. Now flip it upside down. That's what deflects the water down.If the flaw in that design isn't apparent, let me elaborate. When the high pressure stream of waste water hits the bottom of the box, it splashes with force in all directions--including the side of the box that's missing. It then hits the side of the air gap and, unsurprisingly, sprays in all directions again. One of those directions is up--and out of the air gap.If you have an old dishwasher that takes forever to drain, this will probably work fine. My fancy new LG dishwasher on the otherhand shoots water almost to the ceiling when I remove this 3-sided deflection cap. The poor design could have been easily corrected if there was a "U" shaped piece to slip onto the tube. Currently, I have the whole thing wrapped in duct tape until I can fix it. I'll probably 3d print a "U" shaped piece and see how that goes. If it works, you'll be able to find it on thingiverse by searching for Design House 522946 Dish Washer Air Gap Defector,
