Description

The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton tells the story of Lily Bart, aged 29, beautiful, impoverished and in need of a rich husband to safeguard her place in the social elite, and to support her expensive habits - her clothes, her charities and her gambling. Unwilling to marry without both love and money, Lily becomes vulnerable to the kind of gossip and slander which attach to a girl who has been on the marriage market for too long. Wharton charts the course of Lily's life, providing, along the way, a wider picture of a society in transition, a rapidly changing New York where the old certainties of manners, morals and family have disappeared and the individual has become an expendable commodity.

Edith Wharton was an incredibly talented writer who lived in an upper-class society. She saw a love of money and social-status taking over the traditional family values in America. So eventually she wrote The House of Mirth, which is about a girl who is very well off in the world. She has a rich aunt who once in a while gives her large sums of money as ‘gifts’, she could marry practically any man she wants. Yet she doesn’t marry any man she wants, and she is unhappy. This book chronicles her life as she fall from her status and becomes a new woman. It was incredible and I will definitely be wanting to read it again and upgrade to a hardback eventually. This copy was very nice for its intended purpose of reading for school. The font was a good size. However, I have noticed that with Wordsworth books, all you have to do is set the thing down and suddenly it has lost some of its black cover, and a bit of white paper is showing through. Otherwise, it’s a great beginner’s copy to the classic.-Grace M
