Description

A family tries to unravel the secrets of their new home which was once a stop on the Underground Railroad in this Edgar Award–winning book from Virginia Hamilton. The house held secrets, Thomas knew, even before he first saw it looming gray and massive on its ledge of rock. It had a century-old legend—two fugitive slaves had been killed by bounty hunters after leaving its passageways, and Dies Drear himself, the abolitionist who had made the house into a station on the Underground Railroad, had been murdered there. The ghosts of the three were said to walk its rooms…

My 3rd grade Reading textbook contained an excerpt from this book (no spoilers, but it started with Thomas finding a button and ended with Mr. Small coming back into the kitchen) that absolutely terrified me. Nearly 35 years later, something put me in mind of it and I decided to read the entire story. I can see why I was so scared as a child--the book is written mostly from Thomas's point of view, and I felt exactly what he felt! The author does an excellent job of immersing the reader in the story, although at a few spots the POV switches were confusing. It really is an excellent mystery story.
