Description

After a dinner-party to celebrate the engagement of one of their members, twelve young men, all veterans of the recent war in France, and all from the best New York families are found unconscious in the drawing-room of a Fifth Avenue mansion. A thirteenth, the engaged man, lies dead, apparently poisoned. The murderer, for it proves to have been murder, must have been one of the twelve drugged men, but which? Due to the sensitive nature of the case, it falls to detectives Winter and Furneaux to find the culprit. They must act, and act quickly to avoid another tragedy in . . . The House of Peril.

House of Peril was first published in 1922, after the Great War, which has impacted all the characters. The plot opens dramatically with a riotous bachelors party that ends in tragedy. The thirteen young men attending are found unconscious the next morning by the butler. One of the thirteen, a popular young millionaire, is dead. All of these young men were flyers in the war, and the second man to arrive at the scene of the crime (after the butler) is also a young military man. Alec Stuart was decorated for bravery in France, and his courage and idealism will be called upon in this case, because the police make him something of a partner in their investigation. The detectives, Furneaux and Winter, appeared in earlier books: The Strange Case of Mortimer Fenley, and The Postmaster's Daughter. They are a delightful pair – Furneaux small and constantly babbling either nonsense or roundabout wisdom, Winter quietly intelligence but big and strong as a prizefighter. The earlier books were set in England, and Furneaux and Winter were with Scotland Yard. The House of Peril is set in America, and the detectives have transformed into Americans. This oddity is explained in the introduction. If you’ve read the earlier books, the transmigration is a bit confusing at first, but ultimately doesn't detract a bit from this first-rate mystery.Victim and suspects are all golden youths of New York high society, which makes things ticklish for the detectives. Things get ticklish for Alec Stuart, too, for he feels irresistibly attracted to the young lady who was about to marry the murdered millionaire. The action moves from Fifth Avenue to the Adirondacks, where new dangers lurks in lakes and woods. The detectives assume amusing disguises, and good guys and bad guys watch each other and eavesdrop on each other from behind doors and bushes. Almost everybody is armed, and the guns come into play. Although there are plenty of tears and temper tantrums, there are also many humorous moments. Witty little Furneaux loves to tease the lovesick but shy Alec. And Furneaux and Winter bicker and banter like an old married couple.I agree with this editor that The House of Peril is one of Tracy's very best mysteries.
