Throughout the mid-to-late fifties and into the early sixties, tenor sax giant Coleman Hawkins and trumpet legend Roy Eldridge regularly performed together throughout America, frequently under The Jazz At The Philharmonic banner of Norman Granz, This fine CD contains parts of two great 1957 concerts featuring Hawk & Roy backed by The MJQ's John Lewis, piano, Percy Heath, bass, and drummer Connie Kay. The first eight tracks are in stereo as recorded live at Chicago's Opera House, along side four monophonic tracks recorded at The Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles a couple of weeks later. All are inspired readings. A bonus track concluds the CD - a 15 minute JATP workout on Coleman Hawkins composition {or Thelonious Monk's, depending on which source you're looking at} "Stuffy", with Stan Getz, Oscar Peterson, Jo Jones and others joining in. Fun music, with both Hawkins and Eldridge mightily inspired.
