Description

THE GOLDSEEKERS Jim and Hoxie meet the Old Man in a Seattle bar. He’s fought in the Civil War and the Mexican War. The Old Man has been around. He’s even been to Alaska. Took out $35,000 in gold dust ten years back, and spent it on women and high living. Now it’s time to go back and find the real cache he knows is still up there. All he needs are a couple more partners, fellow investors to help pay for the food and equipment they’ll need for a tough winter near the Arctic Circle. Once Jim agrees, Hoxie is in. After all, they’re two Ohio boys looking for adventure. Why not? And soon young Lloyd—son of the rooming-house family they’re living with—decides to join them, bound and determined to find his own independence. But none of them figure on the struggles it will take them just to get to the Yukon—nor the grit it will take to stay.

A straightforward adventure novel portraying three young men of Portland OR seduced into venturing to Alaska just in time for the Gold Rush. I like the author's clear narrative strategies: chronological, unforced, shifting perspective subtly. The three friends are well-sketched, and their adventures, though drearier than they expected, are well-told, too. Burnett wrote more than a dozen novels, mostly on the hard-boiled side. This isn't a crime story per se, but has the cinematic quality the author honed writing screenplays (leading to The Great Escape). For his best work, his first: Little Caesar; or The Asphalt Jungle, or High Sierra, or It's Always Two O'Clock. But this book has pleasures, and passes quickly. Recommended, though it's not deep or as dark as a similar book would be, coming out today.
