Just finished reading this lovely book. The title caught me because I have an interest in Cornwall. I became enamored with its rugged shoreline and crashing waves when I watched Poldark on PBS several years ago. I always wanted to see them for myself and planned to go there this year but ended up purchasing a home in Belize instead. Perhaps next year….The author delivered a great story not only with lovely descriptions of Cornwall and surrounding areas – but not too much description. (I don’t know why authors write pages and pages of descriptions these days. My suggestion, write a couple of paragraphs at most and place the rest in footnotes, reference notes, or end of book author’s notes or appendices.) I love reading about places and events but not in the middle of a good story.)And this is a good story. In fact, an excellent story. She writes characters that are complex and interesting, not stereotypical cliches. I want to know more about them, and I want to cheer them on to success. She also reminds us gently about the thread of the story without repeating it over and over and over again in an in-your-face manner that several authors whom I’ve read recently use. (I get it, he’s a prejudiced, flawed character, you don’t have to repeat his shortcomings after every dialogue he has with the protagonist.) It reminds me of when I mentioned to someone that I enjoyed a certain singer/songwriter, but I hated the repeating lyrics over and over in a 3-minute song. I was told that is done now because of the people who indulge in an abundance of recreational drugs or other substances. Well gee thanks, but what about the rest of us.The House at Mermaid’s Cove is for the rest of us. It is a story that unfolds in the correct space and pacing that allows you to breathe in the scenes and the people and hope for their best. It is also a historical fiction that teaches me things gently. The historical facts don’t get in the way of the story. The book is placed in a certain time frame and in a location that encountered a lot of world history. You know what you are reading happened, but you are reading the story. At the end, the author explained what historical events, people and places caused her to write the characters and story. A perfect way to write a novel as far as I’m concerned. It is my first time reading one of Author Lindsay Jayne Ashford’s books, but I’ve loaded others to read after reading this one.
