A well-crafted police mystery, with Peter Diamond winning the day, with plenty of suspects and motives to explore. As in many other of his mysteries, there is an historical or literary reference, that is an added bonus to the plot. You can go wrong with Peter Lovesey's police books. Characters are real (human, not always right or nice), plot's are intricate and pace is about right. And he wrote a bunch of these so you won't run out of them quickly. While I still am not over the loss of Stephanie, I really liked this snappy and complex story. Hen and Stella are great. Peter Diamond continues to be lucky with the women who surround him - sans Julie of course. Even Georgina’s pompous attitudes seem to work to Diamond’s advantage. Good read all around. This is the first book of this auther that I've read. I will read more of his stuff because this was a fun "who done it" story that keeps your interest, and keeps you guessing about the killer. There aren't too many characters (which is a plus for me) and the ones in the book are all likeable. This author gives us a little (not too much) background and history on the characters. I never like an author or story that does'nt include some background on the characters. How can I be invested in the story if I don't know a little about the people in it. Off to read the first book in this series. In 'The House Sitter', author Peter Lovesey teams up Detective Peter Diamond with Inspector Hen Mallin, who has her own series of books at this point. This is a fun mystery, filled with clues and puzzles worthy of Batman's arch-enemy The Riddler. Another great book from Mr. Lovesey!I had been looking forward to reading Lovesey and wanted to understand why so many readers enjoyed his work. A high recommendation is that I actually remember the book especially for its atmospheric evocation of time and place. Not your usual mystery and in that sense a different and a good read. What can I say? I'm an addict of this series ..... and am working my way through these novels. Some I have liked a bit better than others, but overall I wouldn't want to have missed one. Nice characters, atmosphere, mystery, and a good read on a rainy eve in front of the fire! I recommend you step into this pond! Joyous!Peter Lovesey is one of the most respected and beloved practitioners of traditional mystery in England. Unfortunately, his following in the USA is not as big as it should be.He is a grandmaster of the rare skill these days, the skill of the puzzle. His plots are convoluted and complicated, but what makes it exceptional is that his solutions and twists are unexpected, but logical. His detective Peter Diamond is a real gem too. Big as life figure, but believable with human traits and faults."The House Sitter" is another marvelous book by Peter Lovesey. The eighth in this superlative series. They’re all satisfying without exception, but this one shines. Much like Peter Diamond, but will he catch the Mariner? A seemingly exceptional serial killer with a clear agenda. And who is the body on the beach, apparently not in fitting with the Mariner’s agenda? Bursting with deftly drawn characters and with a compelling narrative and equally compelling plot this is a hugely enjoyable and satisfying read.I think this is my favorite Diamond story. It may be slightly burdened by all the extra detectives it is satisfying that Diamond outwits them all. And it involves a baffling murder - set of murders. But really with a Peter Lovesey book the very best bit is the writing, the characters and all the detail about Bath. I absolutely loved spoilt Sultan coming paw to paw with Raffles the more street wise cat. Lovesey clearly loves cats and often gives one a cameo (Peter Lovesey should use Bath Cats and Dogs Home as a setting for his next book?) Anyway this book charms, amuses and baffles in one great story.Like all Peter Lovesey's books, this is as enjoyable to read as all the others. I have spent lockdown (since our library is not yet open to the public) going through all of his novels. I still have a few to go but I have thoroughly enjoyed all of them. It will be a sad time when I have got through all his publications.BBAnother excellent crime novel from Peter Lovesey.A big fan of the Diamond stories set around the area of Bath and this one didn't fail to live up to expectations.Problem - I start reading this, and everything else just gets put on hold. An enthralling read - thank you Peter Lovesey, you have a great creative imagination.
