Description

Clintonista, A White House Memoir, is a behind-the-scenes look at life and work in the world's most powerful house. Melinda Bates is the only person in history to run the White House Visitors Office for all eight years of an administration. From her perch in the East Wing she organized Easter Egg Rolls, fireworks viewings, and ceremonies for visiting heads of state. Breakfast with Tom Hanks, lunch with Michael Douglas, gifts from the King of Morocco, and dinner seated next to President Bill Clinton were all in a day's work. The author is uniquely qualified to take the reader backstage as celebrities, dignitaries and political power brokers visit President Bill Clinton and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton. How does the White House work? What happens when it doesn’t work so well? How does someone get a job there? Everybody loves the White House, and Clintonista is a zany, heart-breaking, and compelling first- hand account of eight amazing years of American history. This is the SAME book as "White House Story, a Democratic Memoir," only with a different title.

I wish this book could have been written and released while Bill Clinton was still present. It's a revealing look at a brilliant man with a passion to improve the world.Melinda Bates reveals the driving force behind the Clinton admistration - Bill Clinton demanded that each member of his staff as this question of themselves, each day:"What are we doing to make people's lives better?"Do you think if you knew this about President Clinton, you might have been more inclined to put pressure on the Republicans in Congress to stop harassing him and let him do his job?Melinda Bates had THE best job in the world. A lot of work (even more work than I do) - but such fun. Bates was in a position to see the best and the worst of all the members of Congress. It appears that tours of the White House are a plum, Congressmen offer their friends and constituents. Their (staff's) ways of interacting with the Visitors Office reveal so much about the legislators themselves. You'll learn some shocking things about how much resistence there is to logical, inexpensive, sensible systems. And how dangerously inadequate some identification measures are (were) in the White House at the time. Have they improved since then? I suspect not.And you'll meet the subtle, subversive stumbling block Bates had to work around - someone who really should be fired. Has he been? This is an entertaining book. Once I picked it up, I barely put it down. I read through nearly half of the first night, before realizing it was nearly time to get up.You're going to love this. Heck, my mother will love this. I'm buying a copy for her right now. (I keep mine!)
