Mountain House dried meals are the best of the ones I have used over the years. Some selections are better than others of course and the Rice & Chicken for this review is below average. It's tasty without being overly salted like some competitors. The portion is accurate and filling. Unfortunately, this flavor falls VERY SHORT on Chicken... as in almost none. The few pieces that I found in the pouch are small for a reason to allow for rapid re-hydration. If only they actually included more than 6 pieces in the 3-portions included in the pouch. You can make it wherever you are so long as you can measure and boil the water (I recommend carrying a Sunday Spoon (long handled spoon) with you. I will buy again.I use and recommend these meals (though not this particular flavor/option) for:* My hurricane prep kit (I live in FL so you have to have at least 3-days provisions on hand)* As meal planning for when I travel to remote locations for SCUBA diving* I keep a couple in my carry on when I travel for work just in case I am delayed in a remote airport for weather to avoid vending machines and junk food options----------------------------------------------------------NOTE: Having priced these from multiple sources, Amazon's prices are better than my local brick and mortar sellers like Dick's Sporting Goods and Walmart.Fours stars for Rice & Chicken based on the impressive products that Mountain House generally provides. It's a simple dish providing a simple meal. The mixture is predominantly rice that is "cooked" perfectly . Enough chicken to keep the dish satisfying is included, but it could use a little more and the chicken does have a slight dehydrated meat texture (which is what it is, so not a problem -- you might add a hair more water and/or let it steep a couple more minutes to compensate). The flavor is slightly reminiscent of rice with some typical chicken bouillon mix, though it is a little more complicated (the pimientos add a subtle pepper flavor and the turmeric blends nicely).Overall, a good dish if you like a simple rice and chicken meal, just not quite the 5* recipe that Mountain House usually provides. I give it a B-I go on a long hike in the mountains every year, and always have a few bags of this!out of all of them this seems to be the ONE that I don't get sick of eating! some times its hard to pick more dried food or eat some bugs! yes there are times you wonder to your self which would taste better.......!!but this one is good!its also good if you have a few cubes of chicken broth and you turn this in to a soup, its an easy way to make more food and warm you up or if you are sharing.if you have not tried it you should! if you don't like it then... I guess there's always bugs.I bought a bunch of MH pouches and buckets for use as emergency rations at home and for my emergency bag in my car. I took some camping and thought I'd try a few to see how they taste. The chicken and rice was very tasty. PROS: Taste is good. MH pouches are very lightweight--much lighter alternative to MREs. The packaging is sturdy. I like the 10-year shelf life. CONS: The reason why it tastes so good is that it is SALTY as hell. Take a look at the sodium content. In a survival situation I would hope that you are near a consistent water source if you are eating these. Although I'd eat anything if I was starving. Great product. I gave it 5 stars because it meets my intended purpose--lightweight, long shelf-life, palatable emergency rations.Pros: Tastes good, easy to make, light - weight.Cons: It was Not filling. The nutritional label which that each pouch has 3 servings and it claims each serving has 270 calories and 7 grams of protein. I ate all three servings and I was still hungry. I might have died of starvation if I had eaten only 1 serving from the pouch. Also there seems to be much more rice than chicken.I will buy it again and would recommend it to others, but it needs something to go with it to fill you up. Maybe some sort of dessert.I ate the chicken and rice during a ~5 hour training exercise in the snow and cold. This was the first time I've had anything freeze dried since I had "Astronaut Ice cream" at the Air and Space Museum when I was in grade school, and I was really impressed. I expected it to be only 'edible' and tide me over until I could get real food, but it was actually good!I got the standard pouch and it was more than I could eat and we had been working quite hard. I shared it with another person and they really enjoyed it as well. I'm ordering more for my pack and to just have on hand for 'just in case' situations. This is product is beyond my expectation. First, lets to be clear about one thing, I am from South East Asiaso i love rice and i eat all kinda of rice in my life; so i know rice :). If this product is cooked properly according to the package, it tatste somewhat similar to Idian brown rice, which is a bit chewy and crunch at the same time. The flavor is very decent but do not expect the 5 stars quality. What i did were cook 2 bags of it, then eat it with 2 cans of light tuna ( there are 3 of us, and we eat alot of rice since we are all Asian); and we are so full.I've been using Mountain House Meals for a long time. I've eaten just about everything they make and I've never been disappointed. So if your in the market for some dang tasty Meals when Hiking, Biking, Hunting, Fishing, or just camping with the kiddos then I assure you that Mountain House is hard to beat and easy to make and serve and they will be scarfed down by everyone around and you won't hear any complaints. I keep a stash of these with me regardless of where I am or what I'm doing.AAA+++As usual, it came earlier than expected, which is nice. This was the best of theses products that we have tried. Rice and chicken were a good texture, and there was enough for two if you add a little something on the side.
