Director Pete walker and screenwriter David McGillivray do it again. They make a thought-provoking horror thriller about girls being abused at a correctional institute for girls by being tied to a cross and whipped. An old man is kept in the house and is never allowed to leave and he has no idea what year it is. The patrons of the institution (including Walker regular Sheila Keith, who is spine tingling) take the girls to the old man, who acts like a judge and doles out the punishments, enjoying watching the girls being whipped. Things take a turn towards the bizarre when one of the matron's son brings a girl he loves to the institution, not knowing what really goes on there. This clever horror film is also an indictment against organized religion and is never boring. My second favorite Walker horror film after FRIGHTMARE. Kino Lorber/Redemption Films offer most of Walker's films (But where is HOUSE OF THE LONG SHADOWS? THE MGM MOD disc is horrible.) on DVD or Blu-Ray and I recommend almost all of them wholeheartedly. This is one film you will never forget.
