Description

Right away in the west of Ireland lies a tiny hamlet called Kraighten. It is situated, alone, at the base of a low hill. Far around there spreads a waste of bleak and totally inhospitable country; where, here and there at great intervals, one may come upon the ruins of some long desolate cottage—unthatched and stark. The whole land is bare and unpeopled, the very earth scarcely covering the rock that lies beneath it, and with which the country abounds, in places rising out of the soil in wave-shaped ridges. Yet, in spite of its desolation, my friend Tonnison and I had elected to spend our vacation there. He had stumbled on the place by mere chance the year previously, during the course of a long walking tour, and discovered the possibilities for the angler in a small and unnamed river that runs past the outskirts of the little village. I have said that the river is without name; I may add that no map that I have hitherto consulted has shown either village or stream. They seem to have entirely escaped observation: indeed, they might never exist for all that the average guide tells one. Possibly this can be partly accounted for by the fact that the nearest railway station (Ardrahan) is some forty miles distant.

The House on the Borderland and other mysterious places - William Hope Hodgson (fantasy - 2023-03-25 - review #0960) The publisher - Night Shade Books - has produced a handsome set of the complete works of William Hope Hodgson (1877-1918) of which this book - "The House on the Borderland and other mysterious places" - is volume 2 of 5. This 480-page anthology consist of the following Hodgson works:1- The novel "House on the Borderland". Considered to be a classic of supernatural literature. A remarkably creepy tale that devolves into a mystical time travel odyssey. I found the first part arresting but as the story progressed much too long.2- All 9 of his Carnacki the Ghost-Finder stories. Carnacki is a "supernatural detective" who uses his logical skills to debunk claims of ghost and other infestations of the undead. Frankly Algernon Blackwood's John Silence stories or even the Sherlock Holmes stories by Doyle were more entertaining but Carnacki does have his moments.3- 11 stories under the title "Other Tales of Mystery and Suspense". Hodgson wrote many "weird fiction" stories throughout his career many based upon his years as a merchant seaman. Titles include in this book are "The Ghost of the Glenn Doon"; "The Mystery of Captain Chappel" and "The Haunting of the Lady Shannon". William Hope Hodgson was an author that inspired the respect future writers of weird fiction such as H.P. Lovecraft, Fritz Leiber and others. I welcomed the opportunity to read this sampling Mr. Hodgson's fiction. I have no current inclination to read other volumes but nonetheless recommend these editions to any inquiring apprentices of "weird fiction".
