I recommend this book to people who love mystery genre books. This book is amazing and mystery lovers will enjoy it.It was really good loved it z z z z z z z z as s s s s s s s s sI loved this book. I absolutely could not put it down! I recommend this to someone who likes a good book.Oh, how I'd have loved this book as a kid! Then again, oh how I loved it as an adult. Old houses, mysterious rooms, talking animals, boxes in the attic containing magical things. And danger lurking 'round every corner...Doesn't get much better than that. When a family consisting of parents, two sons, and a grandfather moves into a house with tilted floors - partly out of lack of funds and partly because the parents are just plain cool - their first challenge is adjusting the furniture so it won't slide all over the place. One lucky thing, the dining table left by the previous owners was custom made. And, as it turns out, the maker of the table also made the grandfather's wooden leg. Curiouser and curiouser.Very shortly strange, wonderful and not so wonderful things begin happening. The events come rapid-fire, one on the heels of the other, leaving no downtime between for very much character development. That would be a bad thing in a longer book, but in this short gem I had no problem with it.The book's swift action is well-suited to a short attention span, something kids seem to be plagued with in the age of the internet. On the other hand, it could be such a quirky, fast-paced book would encourage a reluctant reader to pick up something else to read after. Sort of the Harry Potter effect in miniature. It's definitely a good place to start when encouraging your child to read over the summer. I plan to give a copy to my own son. When I manage to pry him away from his video games. As far as the writing goes, the best developed character in the book is probably the father rat. The father of the human family and two sons meet him almost immediately, while exploring the house. How they met him is a bit gruesome, but not Stephen King gruesome. It's ick. Let's put it that way, but without blood or gore.Throughout the book the father rat aids them in getting out of various messes, things he knows more about having lived in the area much longer. Strange to think of a rat being a sage, but with everything else that happens pretty soon that's one of the more normal things in the book.Adventure after adventure. Secrets and mysterious powders that make things grow. While it does have a bit of a disjointed feel, overall I see this book having wide appeal. Definitely not literature, and not something I can see becoming a children's classic. Just a plain, fun read.Josh Peshik's parents don't make a lot of money, so when they have the opportunity to purchase an old but spacious mansion they take it. The trouble is, the mansion is tilted. The floors, the furniture, the walls, all slope three degrees inward. Even more strange are the equations, formulas and ideas scribbled all over the walls throughout the house. The Peshiks are determined to make the best of their new house, however, and Josh and his little brother Aaron, along with their mom, dad and grandpa, move in. What follows is a series of adventures and strange occurrences involving the various secrets contained within Tilton House. From talking rats, to a dimmer switch that makes the house disappear, living in the mansion makes for one interesting summer vacation. Despite all of these odd happenings, Josh wants to learn more about the mysterious man who built the mansion and what all of the scribbling mean. Will he be able to uncover the truth about Tilton House and all of its eccentricities?Told in a series of interconnected vignettes, The Tilting House is a fun and original tale where the setting, a mysterious old mansion, is a prominent character in its own right. Immediately after beginning the novel, readers will be intrigued by the oddness of Tilton House. The sloping floors, the crazy scientific scribbling all over the wall, and the magical discoveries of talking rats, powder that makes things grow, and a dimmer switch that makes the mansion disappear. Hidden within all the mansion's eccentricities is a decades old love story that explains the truth behind Tilton House. Tweens will enjoy this quirky novel. The way Llewellyn has organized the chapters makes for an interesting read. There is somewhat of a plot string that continues throughout the novel, but each chapter chronicles a different event that Josh and Aaron experience. The conclusion of the novel is very satisfying but also leaves the story open for sequels.I found this book to be delightful. The idea of a house that slopes leaves many opportunities for fun storylines, and Llewellyn took advantage of them very well. I really liked the romance that Josh and Aaron discovered that was responsible for a lot of the eccentricities of Tilton House. I wouldn't be surprised if Llewellyn wrote some sequels to this story and I look forward to seeing them.Like my review? Go to my profile to find the link to my blog to see other books I recommend!I read this book because I needed some short and quick. I read the inside jacket and it drew me in because I love books with riddles(I could go for a good DaVinci Code book about now). I loved the creativity of this book. The tilting floors and the phrases all over the walls reminds me of how books take on the personality of their owners. I finished the book and sat and thought about certain things in our house that contains memories of our children(blue carpet in living room from when Addy decided to paint our carpet with blue paint). Back to the story, the creativity of two guys who present their handouts on coffins and the next day the person dies. A crazy episode with moss and I have not even gone into detail about the rats and the house itself. If you want something to grab you by the fingers and take you on a crazy ride of some kids, tilted floor house, crazy man across the street, rats, moss, death, action, disappearing houses, and many riddles to solve, then read this book. I am so glad I did instead of neglecting it like I almost did. This is well worth your time.Josh and Aaron are sort of mystery solvers. I love exactly everything about this book. The giant dog, buried treasure, missing bikes, and an invisible house. We read this book every day at lunch time for about a month and a half. I think this is a good book for 2nd grade and up. My sister is in 1st grade did not understand some parts.I really enjoyed this book. And it held my interest throughout. I found myself wishing the best for the Peshiks. Thank you!
