Description

The past uncovered. Rachel Swift travels to the Mediterranean island of Corsica to discover more about her forebears. She comes across a series of passionate love letters and delves into their history. The story unfolds of a secret romance at the start of the 20th century between a village schoolteacher and Maria, the daughter of a bourgeois family. Maria's parents have other plans for her future, though, and she sees her dreams crumble. Her life is played out against the backdrop of Corsica, the 'island of beauty', and the turmoil of World War I.This is a story about love, loss and reconciliation in a strict patriarchal society, whose values are challenged as the world changes.Love gained and lost. "Vanessa Couchman has a huge potential talent and will be an author to watch." - Discovering Diamonds"Beautifully written, evocative of this small island. A lovely book." - TripFiction"...hooked me right to the end... I would highly recommend this book." - BookMuse

I bought this as the author was recommended to me, and I knew pretty much nothing about Corsica. At first I thought it was going to be a modern day novel, but then it cuts back a century or so to village life on the island, in particular the circumstances surrounding one central character, her teenage adventures, through her marriage not of choice and fires her into the First World War in the area of the Verdun conflict and further west, this when the character is nursing the wounded and dying. Then there is her return to Corsica and the shortages of labour, the island having lost so many sons and fathers to the ravages of that war. What I hadn't realised about the author was the pace at which she would make this reader turn the pages. Much of the areas the character passes through from adolescent to adult to wartime nurse in a foreign land were new to me, but I was readily able to venture forth. That's some talent as after a few days I had read the whole book. (It would have been less but I kept being interrupted by a thing called work. Kuh.)I now see that there's a strong possibility of a sequel. This, I will be looking forward to.
